Events, coffee meetings, founder communities, and the unwritten rules of networking in San Francisco.
The Unwritten Rules of SF Founder Life
San Francisco is a small town disguised as a city. The same 500 people show up to the same 5 events. Here's how to make the most of it.
---
Show Up Consistently
Go to events. SF rewards consistency over credentials. Show up to the same meetups for 3 months and you'll know everyone who matters. Luma is how everyone discovers events. follow SF-related calendars religiously.
But don't over-network. The founders who win aren't at every happy hour. They ship product, then show up selectively. Your best intro is a demo, not a business card.

Coffee Meetings Are Currency
In SF, "let's grab coffee" is how business gets done. Always take the meeting. You never know who knows who. A random coffee at Sightglass led to more seed rounds than most pitch events.
---
The Weather Will Surprise You
It's not what you think. San Francisco is foggy, windy, and cold. even in summer. Layers are mandatory. Karl the Fog is real, and he doesn't care about your California dreams.
Pack: A good hoodie, a light jacket, and layers. Leave the shorts at home until you've been here a month.

Getting Around
- Get a Clipper card immediately. BART + Muni will get you everywhere.
- Waymo works like Uber but with no driver. It covers all of SF, rides the freeways, and as of early 2026 it can even drop you at SFO.
- Bay Wheels (Lyft bikes) are great for short trips, especially in flat neighborhoods.
- Walking is underrated. SF is only 7x7 miles. Most founder neighborhoods are walkable.
- You probably don't need a car. Parking is expensive and stressful. Try going without for your first 3 months.

Key Mindset Shifts
1. Speed matters more than polish. Ship fast. Iterate in public. Nobody cares about your deck. they care about your product.
2. Everyone is building something. Your Uber driver might be a founder. Your barista might be an angel investor. Stay curious.
3. Rejection is data. VCs will pass. Co-founders will ghost. Customers will churn. This is normal. Keep going.
4. Your network is your net worth. But build it by being helpful, not by collecting LinkedIn connections.
