Things to Do in San Francisco (2026): A Local Founder's Guide
Last updated: July 2026
Most "things to do in SF" lists were written by people who don't live here. This one is from founders who do. It skips the obvious tourist stuff you can find on any blog and tells you what actually makes a good weekend in San Francisco in 2026.
The classic tourist stops (worth it vs skip)
Golden Gate Bridge: worth it, but walk or bike it, don't just drive past. Rent a bike at Sports Basement in the Presidio and ride to Sausalito, ferry back. Half day, unforgettable.
Alcatraz: worth it once. Book 2 weeks ahead on alcatrazcityc ruises.com or you won't get in. The night tour is better than the day tour.
Fisherman's Wharf: skip. The clam chowder is fine. Pier 39 is a mall. Go to Ferry Building instead for actual local food.
Lombard Street: skip the drive. Walk down it for 3 minutes if you're nearby, that's it.
Cable cars: worth it once for the novelty. Take the Powell-Hyde line to Ghirardelli Square and walk back through Russian Hill.
Painted Ladies: 5-minute photo stop from Alamo Square. Don't plan a day around it.
What locals actually do on weekends
Saturday morning at the Ferry Building farmers market. Grab coffee at Blue Bottle, oysters from Hog Island, and walk the Embarcadero. The best 2 hours in SF.
Hike Lands End to Sutro Baths. Bring a jacket, it's always cold. End at Cliff House for a drink.
Dolores Park on a sunny day. Bring a blanket, a burrito from La Taqueria, and stay from noon to sunset. This is the actual center of SF social life.
Chinatown for dinner. Skip the tourist spots on Grant. Go to R&G Lounge, Great Eastern, or Mister Jiu's (higher end).
Golden Gate Park. The Japanese Tea Garden, de Young Museum, Stow Lake paddle boats, and the free bison paddock. Half a day easy.
Ocean Beach at sunset. Bring a bonfire kit (legal in the fire pits). Layer up.
Twin Peaks at night for the view. Drive up, don't try to walk.
