Where to Live Near Fort Mason
The closer you live, the more you'll get out of the experience. Here are the best neighborhoods ranked by proximity:
Marina District (5-10 min walk) ⭐
The closest neighborhood. Flat streets, waterfront access, lots of young professionals. Chestnut and Union streets have everything you need. Rent runs $2,500-$3,800 for a studio, $3,400-$6,500 for a 1BR (Marina 1BR averages roughly $4,500-$5,200 as of mid-2026, and SF's citywide 1BR median crossed $4,000 in May 2026). Very livable, less gritty than SoMa.
Cow Hollow (10-15 min walk)
Adjacent to the Marina, slightly more residential. Union Street is the main drag. Similar pricing to Marina. Good balance of quiet living and walkable amenities.
Pacific Heights / Lower Pac Heights (15-20 min walk)
More upscale and residential. Beautiful Victorian architecture. Fillmore Street has great restaurants and shopping. Slightly cheaper than Marina for shared housing. Bus connections to Fort Mason are easy.
Russian Hill (15-20 min walk)
Hilly but gorgeous. Polk Street has great bars and restaurants. More affordable than Marina/Pac Heights for the quality. Good bus routes to Fort Mason.
North Beach (20-25 min walk)
SF's Italian neighborhood. Columbus Avenue is the heart of it. Amazing restaurants, old-school bars, City Lights Bookstore. Very walkable to Fort Mason along the waterfront. Cheaper than Marina.

What to Bring
Essentials
- Layers. SF is 55-70°F year-round. Mornings are cold, afternoons warm, evenings cold again. A hoodie + light jacket covers 90% of days.
- Comfortable walking shoes. You'll walk everywhere. Hills are real.
- Laptop + charger. Obviously.
- Power strip. Co-working spaces never have enough outlets.
Nice to Have
- Reusable water bottle. SF tap water is excellent (from Hetch Hetchy).
- Sunscreen. The sun is deceptively strong, especially at Fort Mason.
- Running shoes. The waterfront is one of the best running routes in any city.
- A light backpack. For carrying your laptop between housing and campus.
Don't Bother Bringing
- A car. Parking is expensive and you won't need one. Uber/Lyft and transit cover everything.
- Formal clothes. Nobody dresses up. Hoodie culture is real.
- Too much stuff. You're here to build, not to move in permanently. Pack light.

Making the Most of F.inc
Do This
- Show up every day. The campus is where the magic happens. Remote work defeats the purpose.
- Eat lunch with different people. This is how the best collaborations start.
- Ask for help. Everyone is figuring it out. The founders who ask get further faster.
- Ship something in your first two weeks. Momentum matters more than perfection.
- Go to Fort Mason walks. The waterfront loop (Fort Mason → Crissy Field → Golden Gate Bridge viewpoint) is the best thinking time.
Don't Do This
- Don't isolate. It's tempting to heads-down grind alone. Resist it.
- Don't skip events. Even the ones that seem irrelevant. You never know who you'll meet.
- Don't wait to be ready. Launch ugly, get feedback, iterate.
- Don't forget to explore SF. The city itself is part of the experience.
